Tribute to Tony Rogers

It is with deep regret that that Tony Rogers passed away on Saturday 23rd June 2007. He was on the MTB ride and suffered a heart attack whilst riding. Everything possible was done for him but his chances of recovery were minimal.

Tony was a cheerful member of the club and with his wit added to the humour on the rides. He was kind and considerate, often helping others with puncture repairs. He had cycled all his life both on road and off road, and loved being out on two wheels.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Gladys and all his family.

On 15th September, we received this message from Tony's family

Dear Redhill Cycling club, my name is Bernice Craddock I am Tony Rogers eldest daughter. I would like to say a big thank you to the club for giving my Dad many a happy Saturday out on his bike, he discovered a whole new world with the off road scene as apposed to the road cycling he was involved with as a young man. Thanks to anyone who attended his funeral from the club, I was very sorry not to have spoken to any of you. I know my husband Bob and brother Steve have spoken to a couple of men including the person who bought my Dads bike home on that fateful day.

But to the purpose of this e-mail, exactly a week to the day that my Dad (to use a phrase of his own) stopped breathing and left us as a family broken hearted I finally felt the need to look at the tribute that I had been told about a few days before that had been put on your web page but that I kept bottling out of looking at. Well I thought it was lovely and thoughtful and wished I had looked before and told friends to have a look in. My Mum has a copy on display in her front room. But the thing that moved me most was that I couldnt believe that somebody could be so kind as to print out the tribute then take it all the way down there and rig the water bottles up to the tree and put flowers inside. That person should be very proud of themselves because that was an extremely selfless act and you dont get many of those these days. My Dad would have been overwhelmed.

I do definately intend to visit the area in time with my sons who I know are keen to go and I know someone told my husband and brother that they would be glad to let us know the location etc, but it might not be for a little while as we still have to scatter his ashes yet. And we have to take one thing at a time.

Please show or forward this message to anyone who might be interested.

Many thanks,

Bernice
