After two days of rain, the trails were bound to be a little claggy and
we
certainly found plenty of mud. However the morning turned out to be
fine
with some glimpses of sunshine.
Sixteen souls turned out to attempt the Redland Trail. We got up to
Wolverns
Lane from Logmore Lane, Squires Farm and the very tough climb that
heads
directly up towards Simons Copse. Joining the Redland Trail at the
Summer
Lightning track, we made fairly good progress down to Broadmoor, and
then
Friday Street, given the damp conditions; but by the time we got to
Leith
Hill Road time was pressing. We decided to cut out the loop to Holmwood
St
Mary and took an untested (by us) bridlepath that parallels the road up
the
hill. Christian pointedly remarked that we should have anticipated the
abundance of mud as we passed a riding school at the bottom of the
track. It
turned out to be a long push for most of us up to the junction of
Leyland's
Road. From there it was the familiar western track up to the Tower and
tea.
The return trip was made via Wolverns Lane, and then by taking the
Mag's
Well track down to Squire's farm. Instead of braving the sodden fields
again, we opted for the easier farm road to Logmore Lane and then on to
Westcott.
It was a fairly challenging ride with no incidents apart from a couple
of
topplings off, few horse riders and no punctures.
