Very cheesy

It's stated in other reports - the group originally wanting to head to Rudgwick for the legendary cheese on toast (Grommit) was 30+ so a series of fillets were made with the noble Mike O and Bryan S splitting off some excellent cuts of riders for Walton on the Hill and Sumners Ponds. The remainder stuck to the original destination and made the most of a fabulous morning.

Yes, there was a sprinkling of arm warmers and gilets but once we'd reach Leigh these were peeled off and every basked in a window of warmth and sunshine that lasted for just about the duration of Saturday morning rides - lucky us!

The group was beautifully matched in ability with Robert S urging us to go ahead so he could make his own way at his own pace but actually staying with us pretty much all the way there and back (chapeau!). Clearly, a year of good cycling had rendered all in good condition as the ability to chat jovially and still record a near 17mph average for the trip was in evidence.

Rudgwick does splendid cheese on toast. You might have guessed this already. We stopped at Ellen's Green briefly to phone ahead with our orders but flaky signal meant that we had to place them as we arrived. No problem. They manufactured cheesy comestibles with all due speed... and even advised us on a money-saving wheeze of ordering double rather than singles.

In fact, they seemed to start delivering bonus cheese on toasts to the point where many of us were singularly over-cheesed and concerned about making it back.

No matter, not only did we make it back but did so at a good pace with a few sections where newly-retired whippet Graham took the front and carried a snake-like peloton behind him a some pace.

Michelle was the only woman on the ride hence her starring role in our Busby Berkeley fanned cyclists photos but it was also nice to welcome Dave along for the ride. Strong and dependable - exactly what we like in a rider.

Thanks all, great ride. 47 miles, 1500ft of climbing, ave 16.8mph.
