Uphill and Downhill

Seven of us set off in the drizzle at the ‘Drome and determinedly headed west into the gloom and the weather front in a resigned “well we’re going to get wet whatever we do” mood.

And we did. But, we still needed a stop to remove layers in Newdigate and by the time we reached Forest Green the worst was over.  Just in time to steam ourselves dry climbing over Holmbury Hill to Abinger Hammer and Gomshall.

Having driven ourselves on with mirages of bacon butties when we stopped for tea, the elation of reaching the café was soon dampened for a few of us, when we were told they were not available!  We had to content ourselves from an average selection of cakes instead while coffee guru and cake connoisseur Bryan muttered away about customer service and demand etc.

Never mind, refreshed anyway, we headed back over Peaslake Hill and diverted down through Walliswood instead of the main Capel Road. Mist and gloom there was, but no more rain.

For those returning to the ‘Drome , 49 miles in total. Slightly more than the ride description, sorry about that, but it’s always a risk if I play it by ear instead of Satnav.

Good to see Michelle back on form.

Good to see Heidi again after a few weeks of good excuses.

Good to see Bryan again after weeks and weeks of coffee guru-ing.

And of course, good to see the rest of the bacon buttie brigade.
