Chattering teeth at Headley Heath

Minus one in temperature didn’t deter the Redhill posse from gathering at Headley Heath on Saturday. A few had ridden from Reigate, in the slim hope that the ride would warm them up. They were quickly proven wrong. Most sat in their vehicles until the moment of departure.

We started by riding the sandy tracks of Headley, down a very steep rock strewn descent, building speed, with the intention of minimum effort up to High Ashurst, sadly this fails, and we all puff and blow our way to the top of this technical climb. A gentle climb after this takes us to Box Hill, setting us up for China Pig. After so much rain and mud, the frozen ground comes as a welcome surprise, making it a fast run. Past Rykas and up through Denbies onto the Ranmore road.

We drop off the road heading south and a warning of the deceptive steep descent that follows. Washed out gullies, hidden roots and rocks have ruined rides here before.

300 feet of descending to White Downs and a change in temperature made the clay track a sticky mess. Wheels frames and forks filled up fast with chalky clay. The technique was to keep speed up, and the mud flicked off. Not easy with tired legs, some ended up walking.  After the climb back to Ranmore a rocky byway was enough to shake the worst of the mud off.

Ahh Polsden Lacey and a cup of tea.

Taking the road to Westhumble and the bottom of Juniper amid snow flurries, the climb to Mickleham Downs heats everyone up again.  At the top of White Hill the group splits. Half take the easier route to Headley, half opt for two more killer hills, we arrive within a few minutes of each other.

Thanks to everyone who came. A great ride.
