Our route was across to Box Hill, round Dorking, up the back of Leith Hill, drop off the ridge, cross country to the Downs Link, head south, tea stop, more south, pick up South Downs Way going east at Steyning, pass Devils Dyke, turn south again and down into Brighton until we hit the sea. We caught the train home!
Here's some highlights:
-Unexpectedly, the weather! After a pretty horrible start to the day, the rain steadily lightened and eventually vanished completely, meaning the southern half of the downs link and the the SDW actually felt like June!
-Getting first time rider Jason past the mileage for his longest ever ride to date! Come back for something a little shorter next time Jason!
-Neil setting an absolutely cracking pace on the Downs Link, steaming away in the big ring for mile after mile. Must be all those roadie miles.
-Tea stopping at Southwater country park (it's just a couple of miles away, honest!). The cafe was a little too warm really and leaving was hard, but it was comfy, we found a potential new club sponsor (see photo), and watching Si J and Mark attempt to eat jacket potatoes with all the trimmings in the time the rest of us had some cake was entertaining.
-The climb onto the South Downs at Truleigh Hill. Brutal after a long time spinning away in the big ring, but the views at the top were worth it!
-Fish and chips on the front in Brighton. And still being tempted by seconds.
and finally..
-The company! It's the sort of ride that is made or broken by who's on it, and despite the damp start it was great fun!
