The session saw riders lining up their bikes two-by-two for an ultra-friendly and efficient service from the four volunteers. I have to say publicly, they were just fantastic. Helpful, friendly and giving up a cold Saturday morning to put more local bikes into the 'safe zone', so our special thanks go out to Ashley Eyden, Sarah McCabe and their two colleagues.
The logic is simple: our bikes are now tagged. If they are stolen and later a cyclist buying from someone who clearly doesn't cycle and knows nothing about it can report this. If the bikes are then checked or examined, the deed will become clear... and the trail will go right back to the person who nicked it. All thieves have to sell or pass on stolen bikes - they're clearly not going to ride them - but now those bikes are unsafe for them.
The morning wasn't just tagging... it was a social affair with riders heading off for a few loops, coming back for tea, cake and tagging then heading off once again. Rupert lead a fast group, Roy a G1, Rick a mini G2 and Ian T a 17mph average G3.
So, a message to bike thieves. DO NOT MESS WITH RCC - YOU WILL NOW BE CAUGHT... and the penalty is up to seven years. Without cycling.
Thanks from the club to Sergeant Simon Ward who worked with us to set this up. The remaining mountain bikers will be next sometime in November, Reigate Hill car park.
