The 2008 Mince Pie Ride

It must have been the promise of mince pies and mulled wine at Hever or the hot food to be provided at the finish by Nick Curran that lured 23 riders to the Angel last Sunday, Dec 21.

The scenic route took us through Outwood and Bletchingley to Hurst Green then on to Four Elms to reach Hever just before eleven.

Waiting in the car park with hot mince pies and mulled wine was the expert back up team of Norman and Keith who quickly dealt with our needs.

Then it was time for the return journey taking in Edenbridge and various points back to Redhill.

Unfortunately the ride became a bit disjointed just before Lingfield with the main party heading off course but the leader, who was assisting a back marker taking the direct route.

As riding conditions were so good and the pace a bit faster than expected we all arrived back at Nick’s somewhat earlier than expected but Nick, Rachel and Charlotte soon had hot food and drinks organised and we were all very well fed and looked after.

The ride was notable for several reasons not least of which was the excellent turnout amongst whom it was good to see Tim Sales back on his bike and making good progress after his horrific accident.

Also it was heartening to hear from member’s comments that the traditional type of club ride is still appreciated for its camaraderie and the opportunity to ride with other members and these will continue throughout 2009.
