Mark's ride from Ranmore.

What a change from last week where the trails were dusty and now they are wet, slippery and very muddy. Fortunately I had swapped to my winter tyres and was very grateful of their grip. The mud splattered everywhere, winter riding is well and truly here.

An unforecasted shower soaked those riding to the start of the early morning ride where water proofs were essential to keep dry, if that is possible. The ride set off at quite a pace as there were about 11 miles to cover in the hour. We soon found ourselves arriving at Ranmore looking as though we had been through a mud bath. Despite the conditions, we were able to have a good ride and stretch the legs a bit.

After early morning heavy rain 14 of us headed towards the Drove road and Netley Heath. The dust-dry conditions of the previous week had now turned into a mud bath in places. We carefully went down the chalk track to Shere and on to Farley Green, through Winterfold wood to Reynards Hill where we stopped briefly to admire the somewhat hazy view. On past Ewhurst windmill, down some single-track where we met the road to Peaslake. After a tea stop we took the route to Holmbury St.Mary youth hostel, through Sutton Abinger to the A25 where several riders headed back to Reigate and Redhill directly. The remaining 6 of us went along Abinger Roughs and up the long flint track back to the car park. Total distance 18 miles. No incidents other than a broken chain, a few punctures and one rider taking an early bath in a deep puddle !
