Day Trip to Cwm Carn

Following a last minute decision, some of us headed off to Cwm Carn in South Wales for the day. The two and a half hour drive passed quickly and we set out on the Twrch trail soon after 10am, leaving the packed car park behind us.

The Twrch trail has been improved with a number of modifications, taking out some of the really nasty gnarly sections and adding in some great dips, bumps and berms. Steve, Alan, Graham and Richard took their time to reach the summit, with some trying to overcome the effects of the heavy frost. The descents, as expected were awesome and if you had time, the views in the sunlight across the mountains were stunning.

Completing our first lap we were disappointed to see that the food hut had gone. However, to our delight a new Visitors Centre had just opened, providing much needed warm refreshment.

After a quick break three of us decided to go for another lap, whilst Alan wanted to take some photos. Climbing the hills for the second time was quite a challenge, but we did learn to hone our skills on how to tackle the technical assents. The down hill sections were even better than before as we knew what to expect and we could really ride the trail with confidence. Our arms and legs soon got tired and the high level of concentration was taking its toll. The final descent is quite spectacular being more than enough to put a wide grin your face.

It was a long day, but well worth it. The trail is vastly improved and now with the new Visitor’s Centre it is a very credible MTB haven.
