The weather Gods knew this and set up a really fantastic morning for those of us who responded to Graham’s announcement of a Mince Pie run starting, as usual at the Angel in Woodhatch – the idea being that we complete at Keith and Angela’s for a slap-up tea and cakes. A bright and clear morning without a cloud in the sky – cold until we got moving but then great.

Down the road to Sidlow then South to Norwood hill before heading Westerly. On the road between Parkgate and Rusper a faster group of five had develop and inadvertently opened a considerable gap on the others but as this was always the gameplan we continued accordingly taking in Ockley before heading North and climbing the easier slopes of Leith Hill towards Holmbury St Mary. Ride leader Jon then took us East to join the long climb to the ridge of Leith Hill – then worked our way around to Coldharbour and the glorious though cold descent down towards Dorking. A quick move through the back lanes towards Newdigate and we could nearly smell the mince pies – except that we arrived a tad early (misread Graham’s timetable). The good news – Angela was good enough to let us in and started the tea and cakes early – we were generous and left enough for the “slow” group who joined us at a more reasonable time having covered much the same distance (in not much more time !). A really welcome spread finished off by sampling Angela’s slo gin.

As ever after a stop (and particularly after Angela’s gin), difficult to get going again for the ride back to Woodhatch but the sun stayed out.

I saw just over 50 miles recorded on the speedo - from a ride in the most delightful country with great views and in good company. Jon’s pace was welcome being brisk without hurting too much.

If this sets the scene for Redhill CC Club Runs for 2005, we are going to have some great rides ! Now, will Angela mind if we make her home a regular tea stop ?
